joanne and michael – prestonfield house

This wedding was truly one for the books. Prestonfield House is host to highland cows, PEACOCKS (ahem) and also has a resident cat (usually known as Raven, but currently nicknamed Shaven Raven due to an ill-advised encounter with a peacock) , so I was in heaven. Much of the day was spent with Joey giving me side eye while I was distracted by the animals, but luckily the wedding was so beautiful I was able to tear myself away from the fluffers occasionally. The fact the couple had brought their two Japanese Spitz with them helped a lot.

Prestonfield House is a fabulous place. It has the air of a country house nestled in the middle of it’s own sprawling estate, yet it is in fact a stones throw from the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s one of those places which is full of surprises; there’s something new to look at with every turn of a corner. The rooms vary from the dark, ornate and gothic to light, delicate and whimsical, which can be a tricky thing to balance as a photographer, but the sheer level of detail and care that has gone into the house actually makes it a breeze. It also means there’s something for everyone here.

Joanne and Michael are one of the loveliest couples you could hope to meet. They, along with their nearest and dearest, came all the way from Ireland to marry in Edinburgh so there was a real buzz in the air when I arrived. After I had finished being overawed by the venue and the resident critters, I made my way to the bridal suite to check in on Joanne. She was remarkably calm and, like all my amazing brides, had set aside all the little details she wanted documented. There was a dignified yet relaxed and happy feeling as she and her family got ready which really set the tone for the whole day. Once Joanne had successfully negotiated her way into a wedding dress despite her two pups clamouring for her attention, we made our way down to the ceremony room. The ceremony itself was simple and sweet, with the room adding to the atmosphere. Sunlight simply streamed into the room through the windows, making the two of them glow as they said their vows.

One of my favourite parts of the day was the way that Michael just did not stop smiling. From the moment he set eyes on Joanne as she came down the aisle to when I left that night, he was permanently beaming; you could tell how over the moon he was to be marrying Joanne and that he felt he was the luckiest man in the world. In terms of wedding days in Scotland, he really was. Despite it being a February wedding we had some truly magical weather which made for some amazing portraits. I hope you enjoy this selection of highlights from the day!
